William Carey medical students start rotations at BMH-NM |
|
Baptist North Mississippi welcomes eight William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine 3rd-year medical students for the 2023-2024 academic year. As in years past, they will be rotating throughout the hospital gaining medical experience to help them determine a specialty upon graduation. Each month they will rotate in a different specialty with local physicians, honing skills for their future careers as physicians. They will also participate in daily didactic lectures in the Graduate Medical Education department and interact with current resident physicians frequently. |

Jamil Abdo |

| I was born in Syria and grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. I pursued higher education at Youngstown State University, where I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I chose the path of medicine to positively impact people's lives and serve as a source of support. Outside my studies, I enjoy playing basketball, tennis and spending time with family and friends. |

I was born and raised in Richardson, Texas. I attended the University of Texas at Dallas and got my BS in Biomedical Engineering as I was unsure if I wanted to be an engineer or a doctor. However, I ultimately decided that I wanted to see and help patients firsthand, which I experienced while volunteering at Medical City Plano. I currently am thinking about internal medicine with a fellowship for cardiology but like my experience between choosing engineering or medicine, I am still trying to make up my mind and am excited to experience all the different specialties. As you may have noticed, there is another student here who has the same last name as me. This is not a coincidence - he is my twin brother! Not only do we attend the same medical school, but we also have attended the same schools since elementary and have not been separated yet. The ultimate goal would be to attend the same residency. When I am not in school, I enjoy playing video games with my friends, watching movies, or just hanging out with them in general. |

I was born in Richardson, Texas, but my heritage is Italian. My parents were both born in Vancouver, Canada, and through them I have dual citizenship for Canada and the US. I attended The University of Texas at Dallas, where I completed a BS in Biomedical Engineering. I always knew I wanted to enter the field of medicine. Something about seeing the joy in others’ faces when you help them or comfort them during a hard time in their life drew me to the field, as well as my experiences volunteering at Medical City Plano. Before attending WCUCOM, I was interested in orthopedic surgery, but it was a recent trauma that got me interested in neurology. In September 2020, I developed a spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma that caused me to lose the ability to walk and required surgery and extensive PT/OT to overcome it. Although this experience was one of the scariest moments of my life, it allowed me to see the compassionate, empathetic side of medicine. One of the most interesting things about me is the fact that I have a twin brother who not only attends WCUCOM as well, but as you may have noticed, he is also rotating here at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi! I also enjoy reading comics and watching movies in my spare time, but spending time with my friends and Facetiming my family during dinner are some things I enjoy the most. |
Franklin "Trey" Davis |
| I am from Hattiesburg, Mississippi and I am married with an 18-month-old son. I have a massive chocolate lab, and my wife (not I) has a cat. My wife and I both went to Ole Miss, and we are so excited to be back up here for the next couple of years. I am open to most specialties, so I'm ready to see what the next year brings. I also love anything outdoors, so during some off time you'll probably find me hitting some golf balls at the range or biking the Whirlpool trails. |

I am originally from West Point, Nebraska, and I obtained my undergraduate degree with a dual major in Biology and Chemistry-Health Sciences from Wayne State College in Nebraska. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I worked as a hospice volunteer. I loved interacting with patients and providing them care and comfort. As I pursue medicine, I find it to be intersection of my love for science and people that feeds my intellectual curiosity. In the classroom, I like to stay involved as a member of Sigma Sigma Phi, an osteopathic honors society, and as a peer tutor in Biochemistry, Anatomy, and Physiology. Outside of the classroom, I have a passion for the outdoors, and I hike, camp, and explore state and national parks as much as I can. I am entering my clinical rotations year with a mind open to learning about all specialties while gaining critical skills and knowledge, and I am very excited to learn from the whole care team. |
Ralph "Mitch" Hungerpiller |
| My name is Mitch Hungerpiller, and I am from Birmingham, Alabama. I attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2020. Roll Tide! In my free time I enjoy golfing, hunting, fishing, and flying. I have been flying for almost 15 years, a certificated pilot since 2015, and a certified flight instructor (CFI) for three years. I instructed and flew full time during my last year of college, and the year before I started medical school. I continue to instruct when I can. I am extremely excited to continue my medical education in Oxford, and I look forward to working with everyone at Baptist. |
Spencer Rushing |
| I grew up in Batesville, Mississippi, and I went to college at Ole Miss. When I am not busy with school, I enjoy spending time with my family and my girlfriend Rachel, playing guitar, and playing video games with my friends. I look forward to spending the next year in Oxford learning more and more about medicine, and one day I hope to come back after finishing my medical training to practice in Oxford. |
