PGY2 resident physicians Gabrielle Brewer, DO, and Foster West, DO, were selected as Chief Residents and will serve in the leadership roles in the upcoming academic year. They were selected for the positions by Program Director Estefania Lara Garcia, MD, after a resident nomination process and subsequent interviews with program core faculty and administration.

"Both have demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication to their peers, and a commitment to advancing the mission of our program," Dr. Lara Garcia said. "We are confident that they will lead with integrity, inspire their peers, and represent our program with distinction."

Drs. Brewer and West will be involved in administrative operations of the program, coordinating residents’ clinical and didactic schedules, and serving as leaders in the training of resident physicians and medical students, among other duties. In preparation for assuming the roles in July 2025, they will soon begin making plans for the upcoming academic year and working with outgoing Chief Residents Kelley Bellia, DO, and Zachary Ellis, DO, who are slated to graduate from the program in June 2025.

In preparation for their new roles, both Dr. Brewer and Dr. West will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana, in April to attend the annual Chief Residents Meeting hosted by the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. 

Dr. Brewer hails from Katy, Texas, and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biological Engineering from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public Health from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, and completed her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine in San Antonio, Texas, in 2023.

Dr. West is a native of Leesville, South Carolina, and attended the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, where he earned a bachelor’s degrees in Exercise Science. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine in Buies Creek, North Carolina, in 2023. 

Both joined the program in the summer of 2023 as part of the third class of resident physicians at Baptist North Mississippi, which brought the program to its full complement.
