Guest lecturers provide insight on diabetes management, testing success

Marshall Bouldin, IV, MD, presented a Grand Rounds lecture entitled “Review of Current Diabetes  Guidelines and Antiglycemic Therapy,” on January 18, 2022 in the Graduate Medical Education Department of Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. 

Daniel Griffin, DO, joined residents, students, and faculty on February 9, 2022, to share tips and strategies for maximizing performance and results on tests and preparing for board examinations.

Dr. Bouldin is the Chief Medical Officer, Vice Chairman, and Co-founder of Vigilant Health. Previously, Dr. Bouldin was Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he was Director of the University of Mississippi Diabetes and Metabolism Center. He was also Chief Medical Officer of the Delta Health Alliance, a federally funded not-for-profit corporation responsible for improving health and wellness in the Mississippi Delta region. While at University of Mississippi Medical Center, Dr. Bouldin founded and directed the Delta Diabetes Project, sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Delta Health Alliance, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Bouldin’s work at the Delta Health Alliance and the Delta Diabetes Project are the foundation of Vigilant Health.

Earlier in his medical career, Dr. Bouldin practiced internal medicine in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and medical school at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi. He was also awarded a bachelor’s degree from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

The learning objectives of the presentation were to:

  1. Develop a practical understanding of type 2 diabetes, in the individual patient and in our society
  2. Understand and be able to apply current diabetes guidelines to individual patients
  1. Learn how population health concepts, chronic care models, and value-based care apply to the successful management of diabetes

Dr. Griffin is an intensivist at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. He earned his medical education at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Hattiesburg, MS, in 2015. He completed his residency at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, Miss., followed by his fellowship at University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine in Kansas City.

During his journey through medical school, training, and into practice, he focused on improving his test-taking abilities with the goal of scoring in the highest percentiles. This resulted in outstanding outcomes and culminated with his achievement of the highest scores possible on his Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and Pulmonology board examinations.
