As the new Baptist Medical Group - Oxford Internal Medicine clinic nears completion, preparations are being made to welcome its first patients in the coming weeks. In addition to offering a new point of primary care for residents of Lafayette County and the surrounding areas, it will also serve as a continuity clinic where resident physicians will rotate each month.

The structure of the Internal Medicine residency program’s curriculum places four mouths of Internal Medicine rotations on each resident physicians’ schedule in a 12-month period. During those blocks, four of the trainees will alternate seven days on the hospital inpatient service and five days in the clinic. This allows many hospitalized patients to schedule a follow-up appointment with the same resident physician who cared for them in the hospital within 7 days of their discharge.

If a patient sees another health care professional for their primary care needs, a follow-up visit to the Baptist clinic will not be intended to transition care from their current PCP. The appointments will be aimed at following up on medications, checking in on the patient’s progress since their hospital stay, and addressing any issues that have arisen in addition to a follow-up with their regular primary care physician. Just as any hospitalization record is available to a patient’s primary care physician, they can also view details from these clinic visits so that the patient’s full scope of treatment and care plan is clearly communicated.

The clinic is located at 81 Ed Perry Boulevard in the Oxford Commons development in northeast Oxford. Just off Sisk Avenue, the clinic is at the end of a retail center that includes Pizzashop and Common Ground Coffee Bar, just in front of the Malco movie theater and Premier Lanes entertainment complex.
