Orientation Schedule Set for First Class of Resident Physicians

Before diving into their clinical rotations of residency training, the first class of resident physicians at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi will complete a ten-day orientation period designed to set them up for success and provide a chance to get to know one another and members of the Baptist family. On Monday, June 21, the trainees will arrive for their first official day at BMH-NM, and will participate in sessions that will review Accreditation Commission of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards and milestones, the program’s rotational and didactic calendars, Clinical Learning Environment Review pathways, medial staff bylaws, and more. Other scheduled presentations will ensure the PGY1 group will be acclimated to the hospital’s inpatient wards, Internal Medicine clinic, and the program’s point of care ultrasound and other simulation equipment, wrapping up with “Intern 101” on Wednesday, June 30. The residents begin each of their rotations on Thursday, July 1. Dr. Seger Morris, Program Director, and Dr. Paul DePriest, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, will deliver presentations on leadership to resident and faculty physicians and other hospital leaders during the first week. Several social gatherings and dinners will offer an opportunity for relaxation and developing a deeper connection with one another and with attending physicians and hospital leaders. This carefully constructed “training before the training” period is meant to send each resident physician into their first year of residency training with a solid foundation on which to build their individual successes and path toward a successful career in medicine. |
William Carey Medical Students Wrap Up Year in Oxford
Three William Carey University College of Medicine students are wrapping up their third year of medical school with Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi as their core site. This marks the first year that the facility hosted medical students as a hub site, providing core and selective rotations inside or in close proximity to Oxford, MS. Each student participated in various medical and surgical rotations, worked directly with BMH-NM medical staff and area physicians, and completed their required testing at the hospital.
As Student Doctors Areio Hashemi, Rejina Fahhoum, and James Peeples move into their final year of medical school and begin considering the next steps they will take in their training, we want to shine the spotlight on these excellent students who have spent the year with us.

What did you enjoy the most about your rotations at Baptist North Mississippi?
I absolutely loved every preceptor I was able to work with and the staff everywhere were so kind and welcoming to me. There was also a wide variety of patients to see and it was such a privilege to learn from them.
What was your favorite aspect of living in Oxford this year?
Definitely the food!
Where will you spend your fourth year and what rotations do you have planned?
I will be spending part of my fourth year here in Oxford and part of it in Memphis. So far, I have planned to rotate in the ER, allergy & asthma specialty, pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine and anesthesiology.
What are you looking for in a residency program?
The main element I am looking for in a residency program is community in addition to a welcoming learning environment.
What are your career goals and aspirations at this time?
At this time I hope to work in emergency medicine in the southern region.
What advice would you give a rising third year medical student?
Keep your mind open, be willing to be challenged and never stop studying because there's always something to learn.

What did you enjoy the most about your rotations at Baptist North MS?
The amount of hands-on experience and face time with the attendings.
What was your favorite aspect of living in Oxford this year?
My favorite would have to be access to bike trails.
Where will you spend your 4th year / what rotations do you have planned?
I will be going to Portland, OR, for my 4th year and will start with an Anesthesiology rotation.
What are you looking for in a residency program?
A place with good resident support and great training.
What are your career goals and aspirations at this time (i.e. specialty, type of practice – inpatient vs. ambulatory, geographic preferences, etc)?
I hope to end up back on the West Coast, where I can continue to ride my bike and surf.
What advice would you give a rising 3rd year medical student?
Show genuine interest and be respectful to everyone.
James Peeples
What did you enjoy the most about your rotations at Baptist North Mississippi?
How friendly everyone was and their willingness to help.
What was your favorite aspect of living in Oxford this year?
I went to college here, so I love being able to go to sporting events and being back in Oxford for another year.
Where will you spend your fourth year and what rotations do you have planned?
Most of my fourth year I am hoping to spend here again, with a few away rotations in different cities.
What are you looking for in a residency program?
A program where I feel I can continue to learn and develop skills needed to be the best physician I can be and one where I feel welcomed and has a friendly environment.
What are your career goals and aspirations at this time?
I plan to apply for a residency spot in Internal Medicine and from there see if there is a certain specialty I want to pursue after that. My plan is to stay nearby the Southeast, but I am open to other opportunities.
What advice would you give a rising third year medical student?
Ask questions and try to learn as much as you can while still enjoying being in Oxford.

In addition to hosting these third year rotations, several fourth year medical students will complete Internal Medicine and other specialty rotations at Baptist North Mississippi this fall and winter.
