Program earns ACGME Continued AccreditationÂ

The Internal Medicine residency program at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi recently earned Continued Accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This designation marks the successful culmination of the initial period of establishment for the three-year training program, which was the first medical residency in Oxford, MS. Most notably, the review committee awarded the program Continued Accreditation status without any citations, commending the organization in a notification letter, “...for its demonstrated substantial compliance with the Program Requirements.” "I'm proud of our entire community for their efforts to make this the best community-based Internal Medicine Residency Program," said Program Director Dr. Seger Morris. "Achieving ACGME Continued Accreditation with zero citations provides an important external validation of our commitment and success." After a rigorous development process, the application for the program’s accreditation was submitted in May 2020. The ACGME conducted a site visit in September 2020, after which the the council granted Initial Accreditation to the program in early 2021 with an approved complement of 36 trainees. The first class of resident physicians was recruited to Oxford, MS, during this period, and began their training in July 2021. Over the following years, two additional classes of 12 first-year resident physicians each joined the program, bringing it to full complement in the summer of 2023. Protocol requires that a follow-up site visit be completed between two and three years after a program’s application for Initial Accreditation. This review occurred in March 2023 and included interviews with the ACGME field representative and members of program leadership, faculty, and resident physicians to survey the group regarding compliance to program and specialty standards. The ACGME Review Committee met in early September 2023 and conferred the Continued Accreditation status on the program, which confirms ongoing substantial compliance with the applicable requirements. Barring any unforeseen issues, the next full site visit that the program will be required to undergo will be after 10 years, in 2033. This will be preceded by a comprehensive self-study process. |
Search begins for newest class of trainees
 A new Match season is officially underway, and potential new resident physicians will be welcomed on their visit to Oxford, MS, in a few short weeks. The program received over 2,600 applications on the first day that residency personnel were able to view the submissions on Wednesday, Sept. 27. Faculty recruitment committee members are reviewing the candidates’ packets, and interview offers will begin being made in waves over the following weeks. The next group of 12 interns will begin their training in the summer of 2024. Once again, the program will conduct in-person interviews during the recruitment period. Applicants will be able to experience all that the town, hospital, and surrounding areas have to offer during these visits, which are scheduled for the following dates:
On the evening before these dates, a group of resident physicians will host a social event to get to know their potential co-residents in a casual setting. On interview days, the prospective resident physicians will spend the day in the hospital and in the Baptist Medical Group – Oxford Internal Medicine Clinic learning about day-to-day flow, curriculum, attending didactics, and interviewing with program faculty and leadership. After a welcome breakfast and Town Hall session, they will break into groups to progress through their schedule that rotates between interviews, hospital and clinic tours, and resident physician roundtables. The goal for a typical interview day will be to bring in 20 candidates across each of the six dates above. Any physicians on the general medical staff who are available are welcome to attend the informal meet and greets from 8:00 – 8:30 a.m. on each of the interview dates. We encourage you to mark your calendars and find time to meet them. After the visit and interview days conclude, programs and applicants will submit their rank order lists to the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) by February 28, 2024. Match Week begins Monday, March 11, culminating in Match Day on Friday, March 15. |
