Resident Physicians Earn Scholarly Activity Accolades

In the first half of 2023, trainees in the BMH-NM Internal Medicine residency program attained quite a few accomplishments in scholarly activity. Kicking off the Spring, Baptist North Mississippi was well represented at the Baptist Memorial Medical Education’s annual Scholarly Symposium. There were 17 individual submissions from local resident and faculty physicians to the event, which was held virtually this year. For each case, posters were presented in the online platform, as well as an oral presentation. Over 70% of the current trainees made a submission. One case was selected as part of the symposium’s Grand Rounds series. Faculty members Dr. Nathan Bell and Dr. Samuel Harris, residents Dr. Mahmoud Elshawwaf and Dr. Johnny Green, as well as WCUCOM 3rd-year medical student Alfred Bayaton contributed to the case - “ANCA Vasculitis in the Setting of Hydralazine Use – Vague Complaint on Presentation.” Dr. Elshawwaf led the presentation on the day of the event. Dr. Swetha Priyadarshan, Dr. Simra Kiran, and Dr. Bilal Abaid flexed their scholarly muscles at the 2023 American College of Physicians Alabama / Mississippi Chapter Meeting in Meridian, MS. The organization selected Dr. Priyadarshan to provide an oral presentation on her abstract titled, “Mifepristone in Exogenous Cushing’s Syndrome,” while Drs. Kiran and Abaid were chosen to display their poster titled, “Takayasu Arteritis causing Subclavian Steal Syndrome and presenting as Syncope: A case report.” To close out the summer, Dr. Priyadarshan traveled to Chicago to present at the Endocrine Society's ENDO2023 annual conference, the top global meeting on endocrinology research and clinical care. Her case - “Mifepristone in Exogenous Cushing’s Syndrome” - was accepted from submissions across the globe. |

Resident Physicians Hit the Road with Scholarly Activity

Trainees with the Internal Medicine residency program at Baptist North Mississippi continue to compete regionally, nationally, and even internationally in the scholarly realm. Pain Management Fellowship Representatives Provide Grand Rounds Lecture

Representatives from the Mid-South Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program (MSAM) provided a Grand Rounds presentation in October to the Graduate Medical Education Department at BMH-NM. Dr. Shawn Hamm, who serves as program director of the fellowship, and Dr. Jared Matthews, a current fellow in the program, traveled from Memphis to provide training and updates in their field of specialty. Dr. Hamm provided an overview of the community need for this type of advanced care and details about the consult service provided by the program faculty and its trainees. In a 12-month period ending in April 2021, there were 100,306 drug overdose deaths in the United States, which was a 28.5% increase from the previous 12-month period of April 2019 – April 2020. From 2019-2020, Shelby County, Tennessee, saw a 22% increase in overdose-related deaths and a 68% increase of opioid-related ED visits, mostly from people aged 21-39 years old. Dr. Matthews followed with a presentation titled “Pain Management for Patients on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)." He explained what MAT is and provided details on what medications are available and used in treatment of alcohol use and opioid use disorders. The addiction medicine fellowship program is a collaboration between Baptist Memorial Hospital and Vertava Health. The organizations work to promote the disease model of addiction, raise awareness of substance use disorder, and integrate evidence-based addiction treatment throughout BMHCC’s outpatient clinics, emergency departments, and inpatient units. |
Resident Physicians Present at ACP Abstract Day

PGY1 resident physicians Dr. Zachary Ellis and Dr. Dakota White recently participated in the American College of Physicians and University of Mississippi Medical Center Department of Medicine’s Annual Abstract Day Competition on October 27, 2022. Drs. Ellis and White were selected to present their case, along with over 100 other residents, fellows, and medical students. They were successfully judged and served as the first resident representatives ever from the BMH-NM program at the event. Their presentation was titled “Pneumoscrotum, the initial presentation of pneumothorax following a motor vehicle accident: A Case Report.” Training programs and medical schools from across the state were represented.

Resident Physicians Learn Kata Method for Continuous Improvement
Four resident physicians attended a virtual workshop that introduced them to the Kata method of continuous improvement. Led by Skip Steward, Chief Improvement Officer for Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, the three-day conference delved into the philosophy that individuals can develop habits and skills to obtain true continuous improvement and maximum efficiency.
Steward’s presentation explains, “A Kata is a routine you practice, so its pattern becomes an automatic habit that gives you some new skills.” Personal habits can be harnessed as powerful tools to influence people’s daily lives and outcomes. The learning sessions also provided techniques and methods the trainees can use to overcome obstacles that may stand in the way of success.
Dr. Garrett Hadley, Dr. Simra Kiran, Dr. Swetha Priyadarshan, and Dr. Sajan Sarker completed the seminar in July. In the coming months, the rest of the first class of resident physicians will have the chance to join a workshop. The goal of introducing all 12 resident physicians to the structure and routine of Kata is to elevate their approach to the quality and improvement initiatives they undertake.
