BMH-NM medical staff physicians provide guidance on Parkinson’s, Chronic Kidney Disease

Two members of the Baptist North Mississippi Medical Staff and Internal Medicine Residency faculty provided insight and education from their fields of specialty during recent presentations. Megan Edwards, DO, with Oxford Neurology Clinic, gave a lecture on March 15, 2022, focused on updates in Parkinson’s and outlines for new treatments. This marked the second lecture she has delivered to the program, as well as supporting resident physicians on elective rotations in Neurology. Nate Bell, DO, with Oxford Nephrology & Hypertension Associates, presented to the program on March 31, 2022, on “Chronic Kidney Disease for the Internist.” Dr. Bell provide an overview of important nephrology topics, nephrology referral indications, CKD preparation for dialysis, types and complications of Dialysis, and renal transplant. Resident physicians in the BMH-NM IM program have also enjoyed time with Dr. Bell and his partners on Nephrology elective rotations. |

Lecture spotlights physician and trainee wellbeing

Dr. Peyton Preece visited the program and delivered a presentation on achieving and maintaining wellbeing while in medical training and beyond. The lecture covered burnout, self-assessment, depression, and suicide, and gave actionable steps to prioritizing wellness, especially during the rigors of medical school and residency. He led those in attendance in an exercise to gauge their level of burnout and discussed the results and any changes that could be made. Dr. Preece is a Hospitalist and serves as the interim Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, MS. Internal Medicine Residency Program to Expand as 12 More Trainees Match to Join Inaugural Class

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, proudly announces its next group of incoming Resident Physicians. The 12 trainees who will make up the second class will join the inaugural class of Resident Physicians who founded the program in 2021. The group will begin their three years of training in July 2022 as PGY1s following a two-week orientation period. These clinicians matched with BMH-NM on the first day of the National Resident Matching Program’s Main Residency Match after a rigorous recruitment, interview, and ranking process. The program received 1,500 applications, and a committee comprised of program leadership and core faculty physicians conducted 178 interviews to determine a ranked list of trainees to fill the 12 positions. The program’s mission remains to train clinically and procedurally competent physicians in the specialty of Internal Medicine who will provide high quality, safe, cost-effective, and patient/family-centered care for adults in North Mississippi, upholding the greater Baptist Memorial Health Care mission of “Healing, Preaching and Teaching.” Download a PDF of the class flyer.2022-2023 First-Year internal Medicine Resident Physicians

Associate Program Director Recognized as Outstanding Medical Leader

Jacob Whelan, MD, Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi, was recognized as an outstanding medical leader at the SCP Health Medical Leadership Conference in September. Dr. Whelan and several other colleagues were honored with the Excellence in Leadership Award by SCP Health, a company that provides ER and Hospitalist staffing nationwide, including at Baptist North Mississippi. Dr. Whelan serves as Assistant Medical Director for the Hospitalist group at BMH-NM. Nominated by key leaders within SCP, they were chosen for their “consistent demonstration of superior leadership and proven results at their hospital facility and with the organization, and have achieved the highest level of leadership and performance in their role,” according to a SCP press release. Seeking the next resident physicians in Oxford, MS
Another recruitment season quickly approaches, and excitement is building around the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi to find the next group of resident physicians to join the inaugural class in Oxford, MS.
Unlike this year’s pioneers, the 2022 PGY1s stand to benefit immensely from upper-level trainees. There will certainly be much for them to pass down from their experiences as the first and only medical residents in the facility. With that in mind, candidates do have big shoes to fill. The first recruitment season resulted in a stellar class. Each of them brings a unique background, set of medical skills and knowledge, and outlook on life that makes them a diverse, yet cohesive, strong, and caring team.
Once again, the program will seek to fill 12 PGY1 positions in the National Residency Matching Program’s (NRMP) Main Residency Match. Applications are being taken exclusively via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Town Hall events will be offered throughout the fall to provide insight into curriculum, didactic offerings, life in Oxford, MS, as well as introductions to leadership, faculty members, and resident physicians. Limited in-person and virtual attendance opportunities are available, and details will be posted on the program’s website once dates are set and invitations are extended.
Upon ERAS’ opening to programs on September 29, faculty members will review applications and extend interview invitations throughout the fall. They will focus on the whole candidate, with the most important criteria being “mission fit,” some examples including:
- Being a native of Mississippi or the Mid-South
- Education in Mississippi or the Mid-South (undergraduate, post-graduate, medical school)
- Having a strong connection to loved ones in Mississippi or the Mid-South
- A desire to live in and serve Mississippi and the Mid-South region after training
With the above in mind, no strict cut-off criteria are defined (examples: year of graduation, exam scores or attempts). International medical graduate candidates and applicants who require J-1 visa sponsorship through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Gradautes (ECFMG) will be considered.
