First Class of BMH-NM Resident Physicians Launch Careers

The 12 founding resident physicians of the first medical residency at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi completed their training in June 2024 and are moving on to the next steps in their medical careers. A celebration was held on June 8, 2024, at The Inn at Ole Miss, where faculty, support staff, families, and loved ones gathered to mark the milestone. The evening’s agenda included remarks from Baptist North Mississippi CEO and Administrator Brian Welton, Baptist Memorial Medical Education Designated Institutional Official Dr. Anne Sullivan, Founding Program Director Dr. Seger Morris, and Program Director Dr. Estefania Lara Garcia. Founding members of the program also received special recognition, including those who played key roles in the application process for initial accreditation from The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The ceremony provided a festive send-off for the pioneering graduates to enter independent practice or further their training. Details of their new locations and roles are included below:
Prior to graduation, four of the 12 trainees obtained board certification in Internal Medicine through the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine this Spring. Several of them also completed the American Board of Internal Medicine board certification exam, along with the remainder of the graduating class, in August 2024. Expanded Annual Residency Awards Presented to Faculty, Trainees

BMH-NM Graduate Medical Education toasted the end of another successful academic year with the annual Residency Awards Night on June 8. There was even more to celebrate this year, including the first class of graduating resident physicians and expanded awards categories for resident and faculty physicians who were recognized as going above and beyond. A Founders Award was established this year and highlighted the ceremony. Founding Program Director Dr. Seger S. Morris awarded the special honor to Senior Associate Program Director Dr. Jacob Whelan in recognition of his tireless efforts and dedication to establishing Graduate Medical Education at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi. New group of William Carey 3rd-year medical students join BMH-NM

Baptist North Mississippi welcomes eight William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine 3rd-year medical students for the 2024-2025 academic year. As in years past, they will be rotating throughout the hospital gaining medical experience to help them determine a specialty upon graduation. Each month they will rotate in a different specialty with local physicians, honing skills for their future careers as physicians. They will also participate in daily didactic lectures in the Graduate Medical Education department and interact with current resident physicians frequently.

Hadley Named Chief Resident for Upcoming Academic Year

Garrett Hadley, DO, was appointed as Chief Resident for the upcoming Academic Year. In his new role, Dr. Hadley will be involved in administrative operations of the program, as well as coordinating residents’ clinical and didactic schedules and serving as a leader in the training of resident physicians and medical students, among other duties. He was selected for the position by Program Director Seger S. Morris, DO, faculty and resident physicians, and program administration after a nomination and voting process this Spring. "Dr. Hadley has demonstrated the organizational skills, desire for continuous improvement, as well as clinical and academic excellence necessary to serve in this important role," Morris said. "Most importantly, he has garnered the trust of his peers, faculty, and administrative team to consistently act selflessly, with the interests of our patients and the program always paramount. I look forward to his leadership growth through this experience." In preparation for the new role, Dr. Hadley attended a leadership skills training program for Chief Residents in May that was hosted by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in Philadelphia, Penn. He has already been instrumental in preparing for the new academic year and expansion of the program. "I’m very excited to serve as Chief Resident this coming academic year," Hadley said. "I feel honored to have the privilege. I look forward to working alongside our incredible faculty and staff to continue to improve the program." Dr. Hadley joined the program in the summer of 2021 as part of the inaugural class. He hails from Shawnee, Okla., and received a B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. He received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Smith, Ark., in 2021. "Primarily, I hope to serve as a strong advocate for my fellow residents," Hadley said. "I also look forward to taking part in the academic curriculum, facilitating resident career development, and serving as a mentor to incoming residents and medical students." |

Construction and planning underway to prepare for first resident physicians’ arrival
As the calendar draws ever closer to July 1, projects to prepare for the inaugural class of resident physicians in Oxford continue to move full speed ahead.
Construction will begin any day on the first phase of the Graduate Medical Education space, the bulk of which is the buildout of classroom space. The installation of room dividers allows for division of the room into separate meeting areas or for the accommodation of a crowd of over 70 people in one open area. The rooms offer state-of-the-art audiovisual capabilities, providing flexibility to accommodate the varying needs of the daily function of a growing Graduate Medical Education program.
Computer stations will line the walls of the classroom space and will include documentation capabilities and full EMR access. This design allows for use at any point during a resident physician’s day, but particularly during any meetings and lectures when an urgent patient matter may arise without taking the individual away from the main meeting.
Other amenities to be added this Spring include adding easier access to a conference room from the Medical Education space and installation of private and secure lockers for each resident physician.
Simulation equipment is on order for delivery in the coming weeks. This includes the SimMan 3G Plus patient simulator designed to allow learners to practice critical skills with improved realistic features. As previously referenced, the proximity of the main Simulation Lab to the residency suite allows for spontaneous simulation drills and full technological capabilities. In addition, a full spectrum of equipment to improve proficiency in procedural skills will be readily available to resident physicians and medical students just outside the main meeting space in the Graduate Medical Education Department.
Finally, efforts to integrate the program into existing hospital and medical staff workflows have ramped up with ongoing conversations at the forefront of the minds of leaders across the organization on topics such as nursing education, communication hierarchies, identification of resident physicians on the treatment team in the electronic medical record, and individual technology needs.
With each passing day, another building block drops into place and moves the program closer to the end goal of being fully prepared to welcome the first class to Baptist Memorial Hospital - North Mississippi in a few short months.
