Internal Medicine Residency Program to Expand as 12 More Trainees Match to Join Inaugural Class

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, proudly announces its next group of incoming Resident Physicians. The 12 trainees who will make up the second class will join the inaugural class of Resident Physicians who founded the program in 2021. The group will begin their three years of training in July 2022 as PGY1s following a two-week orientation period. These clinicians matched with BMH-NM on the first day of the National Resident Matching Program’s Main Residency Match after a rigorous recruitment, interview, and ranking process. The program received 1,500 applications, and a committee comprised of program leadership and core faculty physicians conducted 178 interviews to determine a ranked list of trainees to fill the 12 positions. The program’s mission remains to train clinically and procedurally competent physicians in the specialty of Internal Medicine who will provide high quality, safe, cost-effective, and patient/family-centered care for adults in North Mississippi, upholding the greater Baptist Memorial Health Care mission of “Healing, Preaching and Teaching.” Download a PDF of the class flyer.2022-2023 First-Year internal Medicine Resident Physicians

Abraham Honored in Inaugural 40 Under 40 List

The Ole Miss Alumni Association has unveiled its inaugural 40 Under 40 class. This program celebrates the personal, professional and philanthropic achievements of successful University of Mississippi graduates under the age of 40. Recipients will be recognized with a ceremony on March 25 as part of Young Alumni Weekend, which includes a crawfish boil at Swayze Field when the Ole Miss baseball Rebels take on Tennessee. The 2022 group of young alumni includes an NBC News producer, a U.S. Space Force commander, a specialist for talent relations and awards at Netflix, and a director of the National Security Council. “We are thrilled to unveil this first year’s class of 40 Under 40 and welcome them back to campus to honor their accomplishments,” said Kirk Purdom (BA 93), Ole Miss Alumni Association CEO. “These outstanding individuals exemplify leadership in their industries and communities, and I’m happy we were able to launch this program of recognition.” Nominations for 40 Under 40 were open from October to December, and more than 500 nominations were received for this year’s class. Honorees must be active members of the Alumni Association, have made a significant impact on their industry or field, have civic or professional achievements, aspire to uphold the core values of the UM Creed, have earned an undergraduate degree from the university and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a lifelong relationship with the university and the OMAA. “The Class of 2022 truly represents the young alumni from Ole Miss with careers in television, government affairs, philanthropy and even the outdoors,” said Sunny Brown (BSFCS 09, MA 11), assistant director of alumni affairs who organized the awards. “It will be so special to award them in March and allow our current students to network with all that our group has to offer.” |
BMH-NM medical staff physicians provide guidance on Parkinson’s, Chronic Kidney Disease

Two members of the Baptist North Mississippi Medical Staff and Internal Medicine Residency faculty provided insight and education from their fields of specialty during recent presentations. Megan Edwards, DO, with Oxford Neurology Clinic, gave a lecture on March 15, 2022, focused on updates in Parkinson’s and outlines for new treatments. This marked the second lecture she has delivered to the program, as well as supporting resident physicians on elective rotations in Neurology. Nate Bell, DO, with Oxford Nephrology & Hypertension Associates, presented to the program on March 31, 2022, on “Chronic Kidney Disease for the Internist.” Dr. Bell provide an overview of important nephrology topics, nephrology referral indications, CKD preparation for dialysis, types and complications of Dialysis, and renal transplant. Resident physicians in the BMH-NM IM program have also enjoyed time with Dr. Bell and his partners on Nephrology elective rotations. |

Lecture spotlights physician and trainee wellbeing

Dr. Peyton Preece visited the program and delivered a presentation on achieving and maintaining wellbeing while in medical training and beyond. The lecture covered burnout, self-assessment, depression, and suicide, and gave actionable steps to prioritizing wellness, especially during the rigors of medical school and residency. He led those in attendance in an exercise to gauge their level of burnout and discussed the results and any changes that could be made. Dr. Preece is a Hospitalist and serves as the interim Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth, MS. PGY2 Resident Physician Selected to Participate in Subspecialty Workshop

PGY2 resident physician Prakhyath Srikaram, MD, recently received the honor of being selected as a participant in the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society’s Trainee Workshop: “Building a Career in Hemostasis and Thrombosis.” According to the society's website, each workshop is open only to 30 trainees who are interested in careers in hemostasis and/or thrombosis. It provides opportunities for case presentations by trainees, lectures from faculty who are leading experts in the field, breakout sessions in smaller groups, as well as networking time. Some of the application requirements included the submission of a candidate's statement, letter of support from the trainee's Program Director, and the option to provide details of an interesting clinical case to be considered for a case presentation during the event. "Dr. Srikaram maintains a deep commitment to continuing work in the field of hemostasis and thrombosis," Program Director Estefania Lara Garcia, MD, said in her letter of support for Dr. Srikaram. "I am certain that the nature of the mentorship offered by HTRS, together with the workshop resources, will empower Dr. Srikaram to make substantial contributions toward the advancement of this field."
